I finished my first full book a couple of months ago and am in the stage where I am waiting for publishers to respond to my submissions. Although previously published in a peer-reviewed textbook on resilience, the editors coordinated that book so I was spared involvement in the publishing aspects.
That’s just a few of the opportunities that await you. Many worry that they don’t have the skills to move to the highly competitive online market. If you are a good writer there is a need for your skills! There are thousands upon thousands of people claiming to be writers and trying to land the available online work. However, only a small number of these individuals are actually skilled writers. If you have a talent for writing there are all kinds of opportunities for you to be the writer you were meant to be.
Retrieve your first draft and make whatever necessary changes you have come up with. Now you have the final draft (manuscript) which can be taken for editing. The proofreading is simply carrying out a spelling and grammar check, which you can do on your own, but the editing needs to be done professionally if you want the book to succeed in publishing. Find an agency that does this kind of work or an individual editor with a good track record.
What gets left out is two attributes critical to your becoming a good writer. These attributes are difficult to achieve; they take a lot of time, and have little reward other than personal satisfaction. As I think about it, I certainly can understand why they are underplayed.
I’m not prepared to say this is true because I know that publishers, magazines and newspapers all hire copy editors for one very good reason. Not every writer on the team has good spelling skills. No writer’s punctuation skills are perfect. And everyone has certain words they almost always type incorrectly. I’ve been a copy editor. It’s always easier to see others mistakes.

Connect it to real life. When you do this step and the next one, your book club becomes an intentional, strategic learning tool. Remember that the end it isn’t about the book, it is about what we can learn from the book. Make sure the conversation talks about how the principles, examples and ideas in the book connect to real life and work.
Overusing tired, cliche type elements. For example, your book is about friendships and building influential relationships. Don’t use the handshake or the smile emoticon. Stay within the basic design rules but think outside the box. Don’t be in such a rush; wait for that magical concept. Be creative; keep looking and noticing good design. Practice using the good elements that please you; pretty soon the concept will come.
A fast way to build your expert status is to teach on your topic. This can be done in person, or on the phone. When you teach on a topic, you are almost automatically seen as an expert on the topic. Plus, teaching classes or workshops can be another way to meet more people, add to your contact list, and develop another revenue stream, all at the same time.
Best of all, if your niche is, for instance, home renovation products and services, get an article printed in one of the trade magazines that serves that industry.
